The Brightside - DIY Father’s Day Idea

In our latest Brightside: Mama of three, Banabae Brand Ambassador Dimity (@_dimity_) shows how kids can make a one-of-a-kind Rad Dad frame using just a stick, wool, pegs, and a favourite photo or artwork.

Looking for a heartfelt and hands-on way to say “I love you, Dad”?

Our Rad Dad Frame project is the perfect mix of fun, creativity, and meaning. Using just a few simple materials—a stick, wool, pegs, and a favourite photo or artwork—your little ones can create a frame that’s as unique as their Rad Dad.

Add personal touches, create a magical “twistie wool” cord, and hang it proudly for a gift that’s made with love. It’s kid-friendly, budget-friendly, and absolutely heart-melting.

Rad Dad Frame: A Crafty Keepsake for Father’s Day

Materials You'll Need:

A stick (from the garden or craft store)

Wool, yarn, ribbon, string, or fabric scraps

Small wooden pegs or clips 2 metal screw hooks

 Wooden letter beads (optional)

 Scissors

 Craft glue

A printed photo or mini artwork

Let’s Make It!

Step 1: Wrap the Stick

Start by wrapping wool or any string around the stick to decorate it. Be as colourful as you like — mix textures, layer colours, and go wild with creativity!  Secure the ends with a dab of glue so it stays in place.

Step 2: Add the Pegs Glue two wooden pegs evenly spaced on the front

of the stick.

These will hold your special photo or masterpiece for Dad.

 Step 3: Personalise It!

Optional: Add wooden beads, letter beads (maybe spell “Rad Dad”?), or any other decorations to make it extra special.

Step 4: Screw In the Hooks Carefully twist a screw hook into each

end of the stick.

These will be used to hang your frame.

Step 5: Make a “Twistie Wool” Hanger

(optional but fun!)

Want to get fancy with your hanging string? Here's how to make a magical twisted cord:

  1. 1. Choose two colours of wool (same length).
  2. 2. Tape one end of both pieces to a table.
  3. 3.  Holding the free ends, twist them tightly around each other until they're well intertwined.
  4. 4.  Bring the twisted end up to meet the taped end (folding the length in half).
  5. 5. While holding both ends together, let go of the middle—the wool will twist up on itself into a beautiful twisted cord!

  6.  Tie this to the hooks and your frame is ready to hang.

Shortcut tip: no time for twistie wool? A simple piece of wool, string, or even a pipe cleaner will work just fine as a hanger.

 Final Touch

Clip in a photo of you and Dad, or a mini artwork, and your Rad Dad Frame is ready to make him smile!
