The Brightside: Focus On Sport - Scarborough Boardriders Club

Welcome to our latest edition of Brightside, where we chat with the Scarborough Boardriders Club. Banabae is proud to sponsor the club, which offers a healthy and friendly environment for people of all ages and backgrounds to come together and share in the stoke of surfing.

Hey Scarborough Boardriders Club, could you introduce yourselves?

We are a Boardriders Club that was established in 1984—it's our 40th year this year!!! The club is from the northern suburbs of the Illawarra on the Coal Coast. It was originally formed out of members of the Scarborough Wombarra Surf Lifesaving Club, and we still have a great relationship with the club.

We have built this club to be one of the largest and most successful Boardriders Clubs in NSW and potentially Australia, with over 220 members. We have produced multiple Illawarra, State and Australian Champions over the last ten years (both male and female), and we currently have our Stanwell Park local male surfer Kalani Ball on the WSL Challenger Series in his pursuit of obtaining a spot on the World Surf League Dream Tour.

We play a major role in our community now in all ages, men and women, ranging from our youngest members being 4 or 5 years of age right up to 70 years old. We use our sponsorship money for training and development within the club and for sending squads to compete around the state and country.

Where can people find you or get involved?

We are over halfway through our 2024 season (Feb-Nov), and our Facebook and Instagram accounts have all the information as it comes through. We will post links on how to sign up via the Liveheats platform website, which manages all membership and club event runnings.

What role do volunteers play in the success of the club?

We are a volunteer group with an elected committee that coordinates all our operations throughout the year. We rely on these people to ensure the club's continued success every year.

Best spot for surfing in the Illawarra?

The Illawarra has many amazing coastlines to surf, all of which are great on any given day.

What tips would you give for groms getting into surfing?

The biggest tip I give any grom is: when conditions are right for them to surf and learn, just make the most of those opportunities and surf as long as you can, as tomorrow may not be as suitable for those moments.

Are there any exciting events coming up this year?

We have some big team events for the club, including the Australian Boardriders Battle in Kiama in November. In September, both Women's and Juniors' Squads will head to the Gold Coast for the annual Kirra Teams Challenge Event.

How does the club support the local surfing community?

We provide a healthy/friendly environment for people from all walks of life and ages to become part of and share the thrill of surfing in our locality. Over the years, we have helped support and raise money for various community activities and functions.
