The Brightside - The Fathering Project

The Brightside: The Fathering Project

The Fathering Project acknowledges the crucial role that fathers and father figures play in the lives of children. The evidence is now strong, undeniable, and persuasive, showing that fathers have the potential to positively impact their children’s health, mental well-being, social success, and academic performance.

This understanding led to the creation of The Fathering Project! We had the opportunity to speak with the team for our latest Brightside installment.

Hey there, could you tell us who you are?

Hey there! We’re The Fathering Project, an Australia-wide organisation with a mission to improve child wellbeing and development by inspiring and equipping fathers and father figures to be the best they can be so their kids can thrive. Research continually finds that active and engaged fathers play a significant role in child development, both socially, emotionally, and cognitively. We advocate 100% for the equal care of children to ensure they grow to reach their full potential!

Could you share the story of how The Fathering Project came to life?

Absolutely! The Fathering Project was founded by lung specialist Dr. Bruce Robinson, who saw firsthand the impact of absent or disengaged fathers on their children’s health. Throughout his work, Dr Robinson noticed that one of the biggest regrets dying men had was not spending enough time with their kids, and if they could re-do life, they would prioritise their family. He started The Fathering Project to help dads become more involved and connected with their kids.

What’s it like juggling family time with this amazing project?

Everyone struggles with the same challenge of the never-ending balancing act of work and family, and we’re no different! We’re a small charity with big goals, so at times, it’s a challenge, but it’s totally worth it, especially when you’ve got a supportive team around you! Our work is all about strengthening families, so we practice what we preach by making sure to prioritise our own family time and flexible work options. It’s all about finding that balance and being present with your kids.

We love that you hold Dad groups! Tell us more about this.

Thanks! Our Dad Groups are an awesome way for like-minded dads to come together, share experiences, and support each other through their parenting journey. We know blokes don’t often find it natural to talk and open up, but these groups are a great way to start the conversation. They provide a sense of community and offer practical advice on everything from parenting to personal wellbeing. It’s all about learning from one another and building stronger bonds with our kids. Our Dads Groups run in-person, through local schools, as well as online, where we get together every month.

Have you faced any challenges since starting your organisation?

Oh, definitely. Like any charity, we’ve had our fair share of challenges, from securing funding to spreading our message. But we see every challenge as an opportunity to grow and improve, and we’re always learning and adapting to better support children, dads and families. Without challenges, there isn’t growth – so we embrace it!

How can people get involved with your mission and support The Fathering Project?

There are plenty of ways to get involved! We operate a range of different programs, including early learning centres, schools, and workplaces. We also offer specialised case management support in the Illawarra region of NSW and Armadale, WA. You can join a Dads Group, volunteer at our events, or even spread the word about our mission. Donations are also a huge help, as they allow us to reach more dads, create more resources and help change children’s futures.

Check out The Fathering Project website for more info on how you can support us.

Could you give our rad dads out there one or two little parenting rituals they could implement in their daily/weekly routine to foster connection with their kids?

Of course! One great ritual we recommend to every dad is having a regularly scheduled “dad date”. Set aside a specific time each week or month to do something special and fun with each one of your kids. The aim here is to spend quality time with each child separately. Whether it’s a trip to the park, a café, going to the cinema, or a bike ride. Another tip is to create a bedtime routine that includes reading a book together or sharing highlights from the day. It’s all about those little memorable moments that build strong, lasting connections.
