The Dreamers #95 - With Rachel Grixti

Rachel Grixti and her family have wholeheartedly embraced a lifestyle of deliberate, unhurried living while traversing the roads in their 4x4 canter. As our newest Dreamer, Rachel is all about finding moments that resonate and being entirely in the present with her family.

WELCOME TO THE DREAMERS.

COME INSIDE THE HOMES OF EVERYDAY FAMILIES AND BUSINESS OWNERS DOING LIFE THEIR WAY.

____________

Hey Rachel, tell us about you and your family.

Hey! There's me and my fiancé Aiden, and our three girls. Kaia is about to turn three, and Luella and Livana are identical 18-month-old twins. Aiden and I are extroverts; however, I still love quiet time and being in my own company. Kaia is the most out-there little girl; she will talk your ear off. Though they were born only eight minutes apart, Luella and Livana's personalities are quite the opposite. Luella is more reserved and loves a good cuddle, whereas Livana is more like her big sister, Kaia.

We love to connect with families on the road. How did your family adventure start?

Our adventure started long before our kids were in the picture. We first hit the road in 2017 after being in a long-distance relationship, as we found this to be the easiest way for us to be together. We cruised around in our 80 series Land Cruiser and rooftop tent. The travel scene has changed a lot since then, with more families than ever selling up to do the big lap.

Your home on wheels looks incredible. What was it like to build this?

We love our setup. It's taken us to so many incredible places. We were lucky to purchase it secondhand. It was already built, but we renovated it to make space for the kids. We added a triple bunk and a toilet and shower, allowing us to go off-grid without sacrificing these small luxuries. It also has a kitchen and a queen bed up top.

Which Australian destination should we be adding to our bucket list?

Such a hard question to answer. Australia has the best of everything. The Kimberly will always be a special place for us, from the beautiful beaches in Broome to the breathtaking waterfalls along the Gibb River Road. The raw beauty of these remote places is imprinted in our memories forever.

Congratulations on the engagement! How did you and Aiden meet?

Thank you so much! It was such a special moment, especially having our girls there for it with the most beautiful view over the ocean. We met while Aiden was on a road trip down south with his cousin on New Year's in 2015. My best friend and I were staying at the same backpackers as them. I lived in Victoria, and he was from NSW, so we did long distance for a year and a half before we got on the road full time.

Any tips for families living on the road?

Slow down! The thing we love most about this lifestyle is the opportunity it gives us to be fully present as a family. It doesn't always have to be about reaching the next destination or getting the perfect shot for Instagram.

Any exciting plans for the year?

This year, we have some big plans and goals. Our dream is to purchase some acreage and build an off-grid homestead, tend to a veggie garden, adopt animals and maybe even start a campground of our own someday. We've thought about doing it for a long time, and now we finally feel ready for this next chapter after nearly seven years of full-time travel.
