The Dreamers - Amanda Stevens

Welcome to Dreamers — our series celebrating the parents, creatives and families who inspire the way we live, create and raise our little people.

This month, we’re spotlighting Amanda  (@amanda.sstevens) — mama-to-be, and the creative heart behind Other Wedding Stories,(@otherweddingstories) where she captures love with honesty, emotion and a beautifully documentary lens. As she prepares to welcome a new baby, Amanda embodies a season of growth — balancing motherhood, creativity, and the art of telling meaningful stories.

Your family is on the cusp of becoming three. Tell us about this season you’re in and when your little one is set to arrive.

It’s been such a special time, slowly transitioning into parenthood and dreaming what that will be like. We spent the first half of my pregnancy travelling Europe while shooting weddings and treated it as a big baby moon, and the latter half immersed in nature — surfing and swimming, nights on headlands and out camping. We’ve always lived very fast-paced lives, so being able to do both during this pregnancy is something we’ll always remember. She’s expected mid-February, though we have a feeling she might be eager to join us a little earlier.

Your mid-century home feels deeply creative. What drew you to this space, and how does it shape the way you live?

The first things we fell in love with were the tiles and the stairs. The view was a huge surprise — and something we still pinch ourselves about. It’s a very small space, but we enjoy a challenge. Since we spend so much time outdoors, it makes sense to keep things minimal. We’re forced to size down and live simply, though by nature we’re vintage hunters at heart and always looking to redecorate...

As you prepare for a baby, you’ve chosen to stay in this small, character-filled home. Why does it feel right for this season?

We want to stay true to ourselves and focus on what really matters at this stage in life. Quality time as a family and being able to step into our backyard and spend time with her on the grass or down the road on the beach. Still near the city buzz of Sydney but tucked away in nature.

You move between home, nature, and constant travel. How do you balance being grounded with a nomadic lifestyle?

Once we’re home here on the Northern Beaches, we’re very settled in our routines and way of life. We make an effort to be present instead of constantly thinking about the next trip or project — or at least we try. We spend time with our community and lean into our interests. When we travel, we do our best to involve family and are incredibly grateful that our work in photography and videography allows us to enjoy so many incredible places while doing so.

Travelling to Europe each year for work is a big part of your story. How does moving between continents influence you creatively and as a family?
Through our work and travels, we’re constantly exposed to so much beauty. It encourages us to stay curious and grateful for the small, fleeting moments around us. It will be especially meaningful to continue this and experience it all through her eyes, and as a family of three.

With Sweden being such an important anchor for you, what values or traditions do you hope to pass on?

Sweden has such a beautiful way of honouring both the big and small moments in life — whether it’s soaking up the sun when it finally appears after winter or hosting a dinner party on a Wednesday night “Lill-lördag” (Tiny Saturday) That’s something I want to anchor in our family. We’ll both make an effort to speak Swedish with her, and of course, Swedish food and sweets will never be forgotten.

Sitting in your garden right now, what does a “beautiful life” mean to you?

Without sounding completely cliché — being surrounded by your loved ones, with nowhere else you need to be. What more do you really need?
