The Dreamers - Banabae x Emma Wand - The Jakes Family

Welcome to the new Dreamers series, created in collaboration with Emma Wand Photography—where we celebrate the beauty, chaos, and magic of real family life. This month, meet Kylie Williams – mama of two, nature lover, and believer in the beauty of a slow, simple day. Kylie shares how yoga, surfing, and her local community shape the rhythm of family life.

Can you tell us a little about yourself and who is in your family?

In our family is myself, my husband Steve, our sensitive kind

boy Bodhi and our cheeky happy girl Vahla.

Where do you live, and how has the local environment and community shaped your daily life?

We live in the Sutherland Shire, both of us grew up here. We have our little home in Caringbah South and spend as much time as we can down the beach. I love taking the kids to Oak Park pool it’s just so beautiful there. Steve is a keen surfer and is out early on the weekends in the water at sunrise whenever he can!

What does a ‘happy day’ look like in your home—what are the small, sacred moments that fill you with joy?

Less is more, we enjoy just a simple day. Taking the kids out for a walk and a hot drink early in the morning and then spending the afternoon at home. We have a beautiful sweetgum tree out the front of our house and the afternoon sun shining through the leaves while we sit on the deck and have dinner and a run around is just so perfect. At the moment I’m really savouring getting out to practice yoga when I can. it’s been a while as I’m breastfeeding Vahla but now I can get out for longer periods I’m getting a good full ashtanga practice once a week and my body is feeling stronger again.

How does your local environment and community influence the way you raise your children ?

This year I’ve enrolled Bodhi in Bush Play School and that’s really influenced how I’ve been spending our time together. Especially as I’ve been on maternity leave and have had the summer free to explore different swimming spots or parks around the shire that I wouldn’t normally be able to get to. Watching how Bo has embraced nature and imaginative play so much more since starting bush school made me really get out of the house more with less and just explore together.

You’re raising two little dreamers—what values or philosophies do you hope to pass on to them?
I hope they’re kind, gracious and curious. And I hope they both surf and do yoga! Those 2 things I think ground you in your body and in nature and teach you a lot about living.

What lessons have your children taught you that no book, teacher, or experience ever could?

They have and are teaching me to trust my instincts. I think we all have strong gut instinct as women but when you’ve had children it really becomes so strong and the more you can lean into it and trust it the easier things seem to flow.

What is your favourite winter activity to do as a family?

Even in winter I still love any time we can get out down to the beach. The water is warmer and the when the sun is out it’s just bliss.

Finally - what are your favourite Banabae pieces?

The classic ringer tees are always fun, such cool prints.  Really loving the women’s knit pants and Retro shorts. the nature club jumper is perfect for Bo to wear to Bush school!
