The Dreamers #81 - With Naomi Watt From The Sisters

Floral stylists The Sisters, Naomi and Esther,  have always both been completely besotted with nature in all its forms. For our latest Dreamers, Naomi takes us through her art filled beach shack in the village of Kurnell, Sydney.

WELCOME TO THE DREAMERS.

COME INSIDE THE HOMES OF EVERYDAY FAMILIES AND BUSINESS OWNERS DOING LIFE THEIR WAY.

____________

Hey Naomi, tell us who's in your fam?

I'm married to my husband Nick, and we have three kids: Luna, who's six, Sol, who is four, and River, who is two. We haven't got any pets yet! I keep telling the kids we'll get a dog once every child is out of nappies!

Your home in Kurnell is beautiful. Tell us what it's like to live in your community!

I feel like we are so blessed! We are surrounded by young families, but also, it's the place itself. I love how relaxed it is and that we have so many beautiful swimming spots just a walk away!

Tell us about @the_sisters. How did you get into the business of flowers?

I lived in Bathurst for a bit in my teens, and I did work experience in a country florist and absolutely loved it. So when we moved back to Sydney, I left school and did a traineeship. Six years later, my sister Esther and I bought the shop I was working in. At 21 and 18, the bank wouldn't lend us the cash because we were too young, so our parents helped us with the initial loan.

We worked so hard to pay our parents back. We would spend hours after the shop closed restyling it so it looked all new and fresh in the morning. We were so passionate and keen to work hard to make it work. The Sisters was born out of that shop. We held the retail space but were getting really fun and creative jobs that took us on the road and out of the shop, and that work was its own thing, so that's how The Sisters was born. Soon after that, we met our now husbands and could see that we couldn't keep doing it all, so when Luna was born, we sold the flower shop and just kept forging forward with The Sisters!

What does a day in the life of a mama and a business owner look like?

It's been one big learning curve and has changed a lot with every new baby we brought home! I feel like when I first had Luna, I was still able to work most days, and while it was harder, it was also very achievable. By the time Sol came, I found it very hard. I love my work, but I found the juggling almost impossible. That definitely was the biggest shift. I realised stretching every day to fit it all in wasn't sustainable, so I blocked my time so that I was either completely mothering or completely working, trying hard not to mix the two.

These days, with three kids, I do all my work at night, mainly all the emails and socials. Then Fridays are my studio days, so I go to market at 4 am every Friday, come home and unpack the car, then go inside to kids: breaky, school lunches, school and preschool drop off, and then back into the studio to put together all the flowers. If I haven't finished by the end of school hours, then I pop back into the studio in the evening. Also, I feel like we've found a beautiful nanny who fills all the gaps because realistically that's a cruisy Friday, and usually, we have a few jobs happening at one time, so she's amazing at helping with pickup!

Your home is full of an eclectic collection of art prints and paintings. Can you tell us who are some of your favourite artists at the moment?

Oh, thank you! I've always loved the work of Nathan, Blackist, and Studio of the Sun, which is the print we have in our kitchen. I'm obsessed. I just love colour, fun and life, and I love any body of work that speaks to that!

Where do you look for inspiration when styling your interiors?

Colour, for sure! I've got a Dutch background, and so since forever, I've been surrounded by the concept of the word Gezellig. It basically means cosy or quaint, but growing up home is Gezellig. It's having flowers, art, and coffee brewing. It's holding space for friends, making a house a home. I'm obsessed with it, so that's my inspiration, my house feeling warm and cosy and home to anyone who enters.
