The Brightside: DIY Soothing Balm by Courtney Dow

The Brightside: DIY Soothing Balm by Courtney Dow

It's Plastic Free July, and this month's Brightside guest is someone who's built a whole life (and a whole community) around simple, low tox swaps. Meet Courtney Dow: mum of three, Noosa Hinterland local, and founder of Her Natural Home. Through her social media and digital membership, Courtney teaches women how healthier living doesn't have to mean overhauling everything at once . It takes just one small swap at a time.

DIY Soothing balm

Perfect for dry skin. This home made balm also works well as a sleep balm for kids with calming lavender. You can rub in on their backs or feet before bed

Ingredients

Mango Butter: 15 g (Can swap for shea butter)

Beeswax Pastilles: 10 g

Coconut Oil: 25 ml (about 2 tablespoons)

Vitamin E Oil (optional): 1 ml

Lavender Essential Oil: 5 drops Instructions

Melt the Base: Place the oil, butter and beeswax into a double boiler or a heat-proof glass measuring cup placed over a small pot of simmering water

Combine Oils: Once the wax and butter are entirely melted and clear, remove from the heat. Immediately stir in the Vitamin E oil.

Add Essential Oils: Let the mixture cool slightly for 1-2 minutes (it should still be completely liquid, but no longer piping hot). Stir in your essential oil.

Pour & Set: Carefully pour the liquid balm into small metal or glass storage containers.

Allow it to cool and solidify completely before using (usually 15-30 minutes).
